Michi takes 3rd place at XTerra Maui

Michael Weiss completed his 2010 triathlon season with a stellar performance in the XTERRA World Championships on Maui, Hawaii. The off-road, extreme triathlon followed the IRONMAN World Championships (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii) by only two weeks. Participating in both events demands exceptional recovery efforts, endurance, and will power.

The infamous XTERRA Maui course features a 1500 meter swim from Makena Beach, followed by a treacherous 20 mile mountain bike ride, and finally the 7 mile trail run leading you back to the Makena Beach finish.

Michael started the two loop swim course with approximately 700 XTERRA competitors. He was 29th out of the water in 20:47, an excellent swim time for Weiss. Once on the mountain bike he put the "Wiki-Miki” nickname into action. Weiss overtook his competitors through course obstacles known as Heart Break Hill, Bone Yard, and The Plunge and proved that his mountain bike skills had not suffered during Ironman training. Michi completed the bike course in 1:29:08 (2nd fastest behind World Champion, Conrad Stoltz) and entered T2 with Frankie Batelier (France) in 2nd place. Michael and Frankie fought hard to close the gap on leader Conrad Stoltz, as they ran the challenging terrain through Spooky Forest and Big Beach.

Michael Weiss finished the XTERRA World Championships in 3rd place with another safe and successful performance. He was delighted with his swim time and proud of the strength he showed on the bike and run following his Ironman.

"Maui was the perfect end to an amazing season for me,” Michael admitted at the finish line. He had won the IRONMAN St. George title earlier in the year, along with 3rd at IRONMAN Austria, and 13th in the IRONMAN World Championships two weeks ago. "I am already filled with energy and inspiration for 2011!”
