The 7th annual Ford Ironman Arizona took place on Sunday November 20th in the University town of Tempe. Nearly 3,000 athletes competed in the full Ironman event, consisting of a 2.4 mile swim in Tempe Town Lake, 112 mile bike course into the Sonoran desert, and 26.2 mile run around the lake and Papago Park.
Michael Weiss took part in the race for the first time as a 2011 season finale. "I feel like I have more left in the tank this year,” Michi said prior to race day, "and am looking forward to giving all the race effort I have left in Arizona to end my season strongly.”
The professional men and women entered the 61F water just as the sun was rising at 6:50am. Michael completed the single loop swim in 54:04min and was in 24th position going onto the bike course. The bike course was three loops and relatively crowded as the morning progressed. Weiss was able to move up through the field quickly maintaining high power and speed during the first two loops. In the final loop Weiss's long season began to take a toll and his average power dropped just below 300Watts. He completed the bike in 4:24:05h (4th fastest split of the day) and in 7th position as the marathon began. Michi averaged a 6:50 minute mile throughout the marathon resulting in a total run time of 2:59:02h and crossed the finish line in 8th position with a time of 8:21:36h.
Michael is thrilled to be in his off season and will enjoy a much needed rest with his family in Maine for Thanksgiving and Austria for Christmas. Weiss will work with his coach, Mario Huys, and develop a 2012 race schedule in the upcoming months.
Michi sends a heartfelt thank you to his family, friends, sponsors, and supporters, many kind words and helping hands were with him this year and their time and energy is truly appreciated!
