Austria's Ironman 70.3 St. Pölten is considered Michael's home race and is held in Lower Austria's Sports Center just 45 minutes from his birth village, Gumpoldskirchen. In 2011 Weiss finished 2nd here and was an obvious favorite in this year's mens field which included Eneko Llanos, Marino Vanhoenacker, and Mathias Hecht.
Michael delivered a stellar overall performance finishing 3rd on the podium behind Ironman Champions Llanos and Vanhoenacker with the second fastest bike split (2:08:23h) and second fastest half marathon time of 1:09:20h.
Coming out of the 1.2 mile lake swim, Michael was 22nd and roughly 4 minutes behind the leaders. Once on the 52 mile bike, he was able to close some of the gap, but the front group remained still out of reach as they entered T2 and Michi started the 13.1 mile run in 9th position.
Weiss fired up the afterburners on the run course picking off competitors one by one until he had run himself into 3rd place, finishing as the first Austrian in a time of 3:53:45h.
Michael now has his sights set on Ironman Austria on June 29th.
