Triathlon professional, Michael Weiss, recently finished second at Ironman Austria in Klagenfurt, has resumed training for the season highlight, Ironman World Championships Hawaii on October 10, 2015. The goals are clear, race commitments have been announced, and there is a personnel change in the Weiss Team.
The countdown to the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii is divided into several blocks. The first is titled "peripheries", focussed primarily on long cycling and running sessions at the training camp in Lucca, Italy.
"The conditions are perfect, almost like in Hawaii,” Michael describes. "It is very hot and has high humidity. In Lucca I can continue to build my strong foundation over the next few weeks.”
The swim training is especially ideal in Michi’s Italy base, with several open water, short and long lap pool options. "The infrastructure is perfect,” he remarks. "I have connected with a great triathlon community here in Lucca and always find high-caliber training partners."
Michael’s next race will be the XeNTiS triathlon in Piberstein on August 15th. "The sprint distance is perfect for in terms of getting some speed work in. Also, I know it has only rained once there in 19 years!" Weiss laughs as he looks forward to the home race in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. He will also complete a half-distance later in August. “Racing is important for my competitive mind frame and it keeps momentum and motivation in the Kona build-up."
This will be Michi’s first Hawaii-preparation without Coach Mario Huys. Earlier this month, Weiss made the decision not to continue under Mario’s guidance and coaching. "I am extremely grateful to Mario. Without him I would not be where I am now,” he remarks. "In addition to my development as a triathlete, he supported me with his many contacts and relationships in sports and business. But at this moment in my triathlon career I know it is time to move in another direction and start a new chapter.”
The cooperation with Michael’s other trainers continues. "Garth Fox will maintain a focus on cycling, I have experienced swim coaches to work with, and I also have IMSB in Maria Enzersdorf, which supports me."
